The Wine Tasting Aroma Wheel

Professor Anne Nobel and her group at the University of California’s School of Enology developed the ‘Aroma Wheel’ in 1984 and modified it again in 1987 to provide a lexicon which can be used to describe wine aroma and flavour in non-judgmental terms, grouping specific terms which can be defined to provide a basis of communication.

The Aroma Wheel is also an attempt to standardise wine terminology so that winemakers, wine judges, marketing personnel, wine writers and more importantly, wine consumers will have a common term of reference when describing a particular wine.
